Setting the scene

Dateline: somewhere in the middle of the state of Washington

The scene: an obscure girls’ softball game

The situation: A senior playing the last game of her high school career hits her first-ever home run. But something goes terribly wrong as she rounds first base and collapses.

The triumph of character

Sometimes character just bubbles to the surface and turns the tide, just when a situation seems hopeless.

I dare you not to be moved by this inspiring example of sportsmanship and kindness on the part of the opposing team. The video below is only six minutes long.

Wow. That’s quite a story. It brought tears to my eyes. This sort of thing is so awesome to see – when so much was at stake for both teams – the sacrifice just to give this girl something she deserved. Quite remarkable.

You’re right, Karen; it IS remarkable, though sometimes I think there is way more everyday courage exhibited than we ever hear about. I loved that this was covered in such a moving way by the media.

I love when the media publishes/posts stuff like this. It seems every day we see so many bad stories…poor and boorish behavior…I love stories like the one you posted. We need to see more stories like this! Gives me hope in the human race!

I had to get tissues when I saw it too, and then I got emotional all over again just trying to tell my husband about it.

What a great story and sensitive coverage.

I know of two high school boys last year who arrived at a robotics contest and sat up until midnight before the competition helping another team get the programming to work on their robot. They considered it a “brother bot” to the one they had brought and cheered as that other team did well.

Despite our greatest fears, empathy and compassion are alive and well.
